Szentendre is a picturesque town near Budapest, Hungary, known for its Mediterranean-style architecture influenced by Serbian, Dalmatian, and Greek settlers who arrived in the late 17th century after escaping Ottoman rule.

Its history dates back to ancient times, beginning with Illyrian and Celtic tribes, and later becoming a Roman fortress called Ulcisia Castra. The town flourished in the 14th century but was devastated during the Ottoman occupation. After liberation in the late 17th century, it was repopulated by immigrants from the Balkans, whose cultural and religious diversity shaped its distinctive baroque and Mediterranean character.

Szentendre grew slowly, maintaining its small-town charm, which attracted artists throughout the 20th century, leading to the establishment of an influential art colony. Today, it is celebrated for its cobbled streets, colorful houses, museums, and vibrant cultural heritage, combining Hungarian and Balkan influences in a unique, historic setting close to the Danube River.
