Szentkereszty Castle
Arcuș, Romania, Romania
Szentkereszty Castle in Arcuș, Romania, evolved from a smaller 19th-century manor into a grand neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance residence by the 1890s, commissioned by Baron Béla Szentkereszty on Renaissance foundations amid a nine-acre English park featuring a large lake with an island bridge. Built by the Szentkereszty family—a Székely noble line—this elegant structure with lion-guarded gates once hosted cultural events before nationalization in 1945, serving as an orphanage, school, cooperative headquarters, and from 1982 as a Communist Party presidential residence and Ceaușescu hunting lodge. Returned to heirs post-1989 and managed by Covasna County Council until 2015, it now stands in good condition but closed to visitors, surrounded by local landmarks like the 13th-century Unitarian fortified church while awaiting full restoration.
