Tamanawa Castlesite
Kamakura, Japan, Japan
Tamanawa Castle in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, was built in 1512 by Hōjō Sōun as a mountain fortress to guard the strategic routes in the region during the Sengoku period.
It was constructed to prevent attacks from rival clans and played an important role as a defensive base for the Hōjō clan, famous for its strong natural fortifications like cliffs and moats. The castle saw many conflicts and remained a key stronghold until the Tokugawa shogunate ordered it to be dismantled in 1703.
Today, physical remnants include moats and earthworks preserved near Ryuho-ji Temple, and excavated artifacts are displayed in the nearby Tamanawa History Museum. The site and museum offer insights into the Sengoku era and the influential role of the Hōjō clan in the history of the Kantō region.
