Temwen Island

Temwen Island is a small volcanic island of about 3 square kilometers, located off the southeastern coast of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is best known as the site of Nan Madol, an ancient and remarkable archaeological complex consisting of around 92 artificial islets built from basalt stones and coral fill, connected by tidal canals.

Nan Madol served as the capital of the Saudeleur dynasty until the early 17th century and is often called the "Venice of the Pacific" because of its unique layout of constructed islets within a lagoon. Temwen Island is linked to Pohnpei by a short causeway and has been inhabited for nearly 2,000 years. It remains culturally significant as the ancestral home of local paramount chiefs and offers natural attractions including diverse birdlife, making it a place rich in history, culture, and ecological interest.

The island forms part of the Madolenihmw Bay area and invites visitors for exploration of both its historical ruins and natural environment.
