Ternopil Castle
Ternopil, Ukraine, Ukraine
Ternopil Castle in Ternopil, Ukraine, was founded in 1540 by Polish Crown Hetman Jan Tarnowski on the marshy banks of the Seret River, with construction completing around 1548 under King Sigismund the Old's authorization to defend against Tatar invasions.
This rectangular stronghold featured thick walls up to 5 meters, defensive towers like Kushnirska and Shevska, a drawbridge entrance, multi-level palace with underground casemates, and a moat linked to what became Ternopil Pond, around which the city grew.
It withstood sieges in 1544, 1575, 1589, and a devastating 1675 Turkish assault by Ibrahim Pasha, later rebuilt by owners like Tomasz Zamoyski and in the 19th century as a palace by Count Korytowski, who removed fortifications.
Repeatedly damaged through wars, the ruins were restored in 1956 for sports use and now house the city museum, preserving foundations amid underground passages once connecting to local churches.
