The Burren

The Burren is a unique and striking lunar-like landscape in northern County Clare on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, covering about 250 square kilometers of exposed gray limestone pavement.

This karst terrain features vast rocky plains etched with crisscrossing cracks called “grikes” that leave isolated rock blocks called “clints,” creating a dramatic stony landscape that tumbles down to the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite its barren appearance, the Burren is a botanical奇迹 with more than 700 flowering plant species thriving in the rock fissures, including rare Arctic, Alpine, and Mediterranean plants that grow together in one of Europe’s most unusual ecosystems.

The area has been shaped over millions of years from ancient tropical sea sediments and was scraped clean during the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago. Famous attractions include the 5,800-year-old Poulnabrone Dolmen (a prehistoric portal tomb), Aillwee Cave with its guided tours, the Cliffs of Moher nearby, and ancient stone forts.
