The Fortress of Arxavia
Câinenii Mari, Romania, Romania
The Fortress of Arxavia, near Câinenii Mari in Vâlcea County, Romania, was an 18th-century Austrian Habsburg guard post built around 1720 during Emperor Charles VI's reign on steep cliffs overlooking the Olt River valley, strategically positioned along the Limes Alutanus Roman road to monitor Wallachian borders after the 1718 Treaty of Passarowitz ended Austro-Turkish wars.
Also called Strassburg fortress, it served as a military outpost amid the region's ancient history—from prehistoric settlements and the Roman Pons Vetus bridge camp to medieval voivodeships—before its demolition in 1739, leaving scant ruins integrated into the dramatic landscape of Cozia Massif gorges.
Today, faint traces persist as an archaeological curiosity near Caroline Rocks with visible Via Carolina road remnants, evoking Romania's layered frontier defenses from Roman castra to Habsburg outposts.
