The Fortress of Giurgiu
Giurgiu, Romania, Romania
The Fortress of Giurgiu, situated on the Danube in Giurgiu, Romania, was first documented in 1403 and likely built or rebuilt by Mircea the Elder around 1386 on older ruins possibly Roman, Byzantine, or Bulgarian, serving as a key Wallachian defense against Ottoman incursions with stone foundations, high wooden-and-earth walls, and two towers—one square, one round.
It changed hands repeatedly among Romanian rulers like Dan II, Alexandru Aldea, Vlad Dracul, Vlad the Impaler, and Mihai Viteazul, who recaptured it around 1595-1601, while enduring Turkish conquests from 1420 onward for nearly 400 years, including destruction under sultans Murad I and Baiazid I.
Demolished by Russian forces under General Kiseleff after the 1828-1829 Russo-Turkish War, its remnants now lie eroded near the river, symbolizing the frontier struggles of medieval Wallachia.
