The Fortress of Troesmis near Turcoaia, Tulcea County, Romania, began as a Dacian settlement mentioned by Ovid around 100 AD, evolving into a major Roman legionary castrum for Legio V Macedonica (107-163 AD) and later Legio II Herculia under Diocletian, strategically guarding the Danube's Limes Moesiae frontier with thick walls, towers, aqueducts, and a civilian canabae.

Rebuilt in multiple phases through Justinian's era (6th century) with horseshoe towers and basilicas, it lost prominence after 7th-century abandonment amid invasions, saw medieval reoccupation (10th-11th centuries), and suffered 19th-century looting where stones were quarried for local buildings.

Its partially excavated ruins reveal layered Roman-Byzantine defenses overlooking the Danube, now an archaeological site blending Dobrogea's ancient military heritage.
