The Ruins of the Fortress in Odorheiu Secuiesc, Romania—known as Székelytámadt or "Székely-Attacked Fortress"—are remnants of a Renaissance-era stronghold built in the 1560s by Prince János Zsigmond on the site of a 15th-century monastery to control the local Székely population after their rebellion. This bastioned fortification in the Italian style featured square towers, a water-filled moat from the Târnava Mare River, and strategic defenses, but it faced repeated destruction: razed by locals in 1599, rebuilt briefly, used militarily under Habsburg rule, and demolished in 1706 during Rákóczi's uprising to prevent enemy capture. Overlaid on earlier Roman castra from the 1st century AD and later repurposed, with its interior cleared in 1891 for a neoclassical gymnasium, the overgrown ruins today evoke Transylvania's turbulent history of resistance and royal suppression amid the town's central landscape.
