Tinnahinch Castle is a ruined tower house located beside the River Barrow in County Carlow, Ireland.
Built in the early 17th century, probably by James Butler, it was designed to control an important river crossing and served as both a residence and a defensive stronghold during a turbulent period in Irish history. The castle played a role in conflicts such as the Irish Confederate Wars and was strengthened for military use. It was eventually burned around 1700 and has remained a ruin ever since.
Despite its condition, many of its defensive features, including a stair tower, bartizan, and machicolation protecting the entrance, can still be identified. Today, Tinnahinch Castle is a striking historical landmark overlooking the River Barrow. Its surviving stone walls offer visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s fortified tower houses and the region’s rich medieval and early modern heritage.
