The Tonga National Museum is a small but important cultural institution in Nukuʻalofa, the capital of Tonga, opened in 1998 and situated in the Queen Salote Memorial Hall near the Tonga National Cultural Centre and the Botanical Gardens. It serves as a museum, gallery, library, and cultural centre, focusing on preserving and presenting Tonga’s history, royal heritage, and traditional arts. The museum displays a compact but varied collection, including ancient Tongan artefacts, pottery, tools, traditional weapons, tapa cloths, woven mats, and items from the royal family, alongside photographs and exhibits that trace the country’s past and ongoing cultural practices. Run by the Culture Division of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, the museum is open on weekdays and offers visitors a quiet, intimate introduction to Tongan identity, craftsmanship, and the legacy of the kingdom’s monarchy.
