Torre da Atalaia
Portalegre, Portugal, Portugal
Torre da Atalaia in Portalegre, Portugal, known as the Atalaia do Torrejão or Torre do Atalaião, is a Late Medieval watchtower from the late 13th or early 14th century, built contemporaneously with Portalegre Castle's Gothic walls under King D. Dinis to serve as an advanced lookout dominating the Alentejo plain at nearly 600 meters elevation.
Positioned strategically above the city for visual signaling via fire or smoke to alert against invasions, it underwent 17th-18th century reforms during the Restoration War when Portalegre's defenses were modernized with bastions by engineers like Nicolau de Langres, featuring a steep escarpment base and circular plan now in partial ruin.
Classified as a Public Interest Property since 1985, this isolated military remnant evokes frontier vigilance amid ongoing classification efforts as a Municipal Monument.
