Torre de Almofala
Portugal, Portugal
Torre de Almofala is a medieval watchtower in Almofala parish, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo municipality, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal near the Spanish border.
Originally a 1st-century Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter in the Civitas Cobelcorum settlement, confirmed by a votive altar stone, it was repurposed around the 10th century by Aguiar monks into a Romanesque tower known as Turris Aquilaris or Torre das Águias.
Named from Arabic al-mahalla meaning "camp," it served frontier vigilance amid the Águeda River valley until excavations in 1997 clarified its layered history, now a classified National Monument with an interpretation center displaying artifacts.
