Torre de Atalaia de Salvaterra do Extremo
Portugal, Portugal
Torre de Atalaia de Salvaterra do Extremo is a medieval watchtower in the remote village of Salvaterra do Extremo, Idanha-a-Nova municipality, Castelo Branco district, eastern Portugal near the Spanish border.
Likely constructed in the 13th century as part of the frontier defense system on a hilltop with natural cliffs providing protection from north to east, it was reinforced in the 15th century with barbicans and towers, and in the 17th century surrounded by modern fortifications alongside the village during ongoing border conflicts.
After repeated wars led to its rebuilding and strengthening, the castle lost its military role by 1846 when the keep was disassembled and repurposed, with the tower adapted into a bell tower and later clock tower, its upper section now incomplete.
