Torre de Menagem de Estremoz
Estremoz, Portugal, Portugal
Torre de Menagem de Estremoz in Estremoz, Portugal, is a striking 27-meter-tall quadrangular keep built in 1324 by King Dinis on pre-existing foundations within the medieval alcáçova, featuring a stone tablet with the coats of arms of Portugal and Aragon honoring Queen Isabel.
Exemplifying late 13th-early 14th century Portuguese military Gothic architecture, it boasts pyramidal merlons crowning its terrace, an octagonal second-floor hall with animalistic and anthropomorphic capitals, zoo-anthropomorphic gargoyles, and machicolation balconies for defense.
Known as the "Tower of the Three Crowns" for construction spanning Afonso IV, Pedro I, and Fernando reigns—or possibly for rooftop crown motifs—it served as a royal prison until the late 18th century and stands well-preserved as a National Monument amid the castle ensemble.
