Torre de Menagem do Castelo da Vidigueira
Vidigueira, Portugal, Portugal
Torre de Menagem do Castelo da Vidigueira in Vidigueira, Portugal, is the Gothic quadrangular keep tower built in 1324 by order of King D. Dinis atop pre-existing foundations, marked by a stone tablet bearing Portugal's arms and those of Aragon from Queen Isabel near its entrance.
Serving as the castle's final military stronghold, it functioned as a royal prison from the mid-14th to late 18th century, with 15th-century ruins inside its enclosure, while the broader site passed through hands including the Order of Santiago, Nuno Álvares Pereira, House of Braganza, and explorer Vasco da Gama, first Count of Vidigueira in 1519.
Now renovated and housing a museum on medieval military history with artifacts, replicas, and documents, it stands amid vineyards alongside a relocated Manueline window linked to the Gama family palace.
