Torre de Val-Boim (ruínas)
Santana, Portugal, Portugal
Torre de Val-Boim ruins in Santana near Portel, Portugal, were constructed around 1261 by nobleman D. João Peres de Aboim after acquiring the lordship of Portel, serving as a late-medieval watchtower or small residential stronghold to monitor access routes in the Alentejo frontier.
This square-plan stone and brick tower originally stood four stories tall with defensive features like square loopholes for light archery, though too compact for a full noble residence and possibly paired with a smaller adjacent turret.
By the mid-17th century it became part of a horse-breeding estate under King José I, but declined after 1835 when the parish lost village status, leaving three of its four walls at 12 meters high amid an olive grove, with the south facade collapsed and interior gutted.
