Torre do Castelo de Aguiar do Sousa
Portugal, Portugal
The Torre do Castelo de Aguiar de Sousa is a medieval tower remnant of an ancient fortress in Aguiar de Sousa, Paredes municipality, Portugal, strategically positioned amid hills for defense in the Sousa Valley.
Likely built around the 10th century as part of early Christian fortifications during the Reconquista, it was famously besieged in 995 by Moorish general Almanzor en route to Braga and Santiago de Compostela. Serving as the seat of a key administrative "Terra" in the 11th century and a powerful Julgado by 1258—spanning much of modern Paredes and beyond—the square tower.
Offset within an oval-walled enclosure, postdates the 12th century amid the site's decline by the late 13th. Granted charters in 1411 by King João I and 1513 by King Manuel I, the ruins were preserved and restored through the 2000s Rota do Românico project, classifying it as a Public Interest Building in 1978 and 2012.
