Tsodilo Hills
North-West Botswana, Botswana
Tsodilo Hills is a group of four prominent hills rising from the Kalahari Desert in northwestern Botswana. The site is one of Africa’s most important cultural landmarks and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 because of its exceptional archaeological, historical, and spiritual significance. Often called the “Louvre of the Desert,” Tsodilo Hills contains more than 4,500 ancient rock paintings, making it one of the world’s richest concentrations of rock art. These artworks, along with archaeological remains, provide evidence of human activity and environmental change stretching back at least 100,000 years. The hills are considered sacred by local San and other communities, who regard them as a place of ancestral spirits and religious importance. Today, visitors come to explore the rock art, learn about the region’s deep history, and experience one of Botswana’s most remarkable cultural and natural treasures.
