Turnu Medieval Fortress
Turnu Măgurele, Romania
The Turnu Medieval Fortress is located near Turnu Măgurele in southern Romania, close to the confluence of the Olt and Danube rivers.
It played a crucial role in the defensive system of Wallachia, especially during the reign of Mircea the Elder in the late 14th century, as part of a chain of fortifications along the Danube to protect against Ottoman threats. The fortress is documented from around 1394 and was an important military stronghold.
Later, in 1417, it came under Ottoman control and became part of the Turkish raya system, serving as a base for Turkish garrisons supervising Wallachia. It was returned to Wallachian control in 1829 but was burned and demolished. Today, the fortress is a historic monument undergoing restoration to preserve its ruins.
The site reflects the strategic military importance of the region through history as a border defense point and a center of Ottoman power for several centuries.
