Uegusuku Castle Ruins
Kumejima, Japan
Uegusuku Castle Ruins on Kume Island, Okinawa, Japan, rest on the island’s highest point at about 310 meters above sea level. Built sometime between the 14th and 16th centuries by the Kumenakagusuku Aji, lord of the region, it features three linear baileys with the main bailey at the summit.
The castle was strategically important for controlling the island and engaging in regional trade, with artifacts indicating links to China before the unification of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Today, the ruins offer panoramic 360-degree views of Kume Island and surrounding seas and are recognized as a National Historic Site.
Parts of the castle were damaged during World War II and used for military purposes before reopening to the public in 2002.
