Uyuni Train Cemetery
Uyuni, Potosí Department, Bolivia
The Uyuni Train Cemetery, located just outside Uyuni in the Potosí Department of Bolivia, is a remarkable open-air collection of abandoned steam locomotives and railcars that date mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Once part of a thriving railway network that transported minerals such as silver and tin, the trains were abandoned when mining declined and railway expansion projects were halted. Over time, the harsh conditions and salt-laden winds from the nearby Salar de Uyuni corroded the metal, creating a striking landscape of rusting engines.
Today, the site is one of Bolivia’s most photographed attractions, offering a fascinating glimpse into the country’s industrial past and serving as a popular stop before visiting the famous salt flats.
