Uzhhorod Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the Uzh River in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, is a medieval fortress with origins tracing back to the 9th century as a wooden structure, later rebuilt in stone during the 13th-14th centuries under Hungarian rule by the Drugeth family, who added Italian-inspired rhomboid bastions.

Fortified further in the 16th-17th centuries to withstand sieges including one by Francis II Rákóczi in 1703-04, it features thick walls up to 3 meters, round towers, a moat, and a Renaissance palace with underground casemates that served as prison and storage. 

Modernized in the 18th century under Habsburg control, it transitioned from military stronghold to residence and theological academy, now housing the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore with over 100,000 exhibits on regional history, culture, and archaeology.
