Vecsey Castle
Livada, Romania, Romania
Vecsey Castle in Livada, Satu Mare County, Romania, is a Gothic-style manor constructed between 1760-1764 by Vice Imperial Marshal István Vécsey as a noble family residence, featuring a massive rectangular structure with basement, ground floor, upper floor, attic, defensive corner bastions, and distinctive dragon-head roof gutters held by snakes.
It suffered a devastating 1823 fire that destroyed its ornate wooden second floor, underwent renovations adding neoclassical frames, passed to the Sztáray family via marriage in 1898, and endured World War II occupation before communist nationalization turned it into an agricultural research station, grain warehouse, summer camp, orphanage, and eventual abandonment since 1999.
Now state-owned yet neglected amid legal battles by heirs for restitution, the crumbling monument evokes Transylvania's faded aristocratic past in rural Satu Mare.
