Vestígios do Castelo de Albufeira
Albufeira, Portugal, Portugal
Vestígios do Castelo de Albufeira in Albufeira, Portugal, are the scant ruins of a strategic Moorish fortress built in the 8th century when Arabs occupied the area, naming it Al-Buhera after earlier Roman settlement as Baltum.
The last Algarve stronghold to fall to Christians, it was conquered in 1249 by King Afonso III—who donated it to the Order of Avis in 1250—and refortified with a rectangular layout, corner defense towers, and three main gates protecting the citadel.
Ravaged by the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, 1833 liberal wars fire, and 1960s urban demolition for a hotel, only fragmented stone walls and foundations remain embedded in the old town's historic core.
