Wass Castle
Romania, Romania
Wass Castle, also known as Wass-Bánffy Castle, is located in Gilău near Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and was constructed after 1439 by Bishop Gheorghe Lepes as a stone fortress with four corner towers surrounding a central courtyard featuring Renaissance architectural elements and decorated window frames. It served as a residence for Queen Isabella Jagiellon in 1541 during political negotiations and sits on archaeological remains of a Roman military camp from the western border of ancient Dacia. Used as a specialized school for children with disabilities from 1972 to 2012, it has since returned to the Bánffy family heirs and includes an 11-hectare natural park, accessible via main transportation routes in Cluj County.
