Wat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai, Thailand

Wat Rong Khun

Chiang Rai, Thailand

Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple, is one of the most famous attractions in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Designed by renowned Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, it was rebuilt and opened to visitors in 1997 as a unique blend of Buddhist teachings, contemporary art, and traditional Thai architecture. The temple is known for its dazzling white exterior decorated with mirrored glass, symbolizing purity and wisdom. Visitors enter by crossing a bridge lined with sculpted hands reaching upward, representing human desires and suffering, before reaching the main hall that symbolizes enlightenment. Unlike most historic temples, Wat Rong Khun is an ongoing artistic project that continues to expand. Its striking design, rich symbolism, and blend of traditional and modern elements make it one of Thailand’s most distinctive and visited cultural landmarks.
