The Zambezi River forms Zimbabwe's northern border with Zambia for about 800 kilometers, flowing eastward as Africa's fourth-longest river at roughly 2,700 kilometers from its source in Zambia's northwest to the Indian Ocean delta in Mozambique.

Along this stretch, it powers through the dramatic Victoria Falls—where it drops over 100 meters into a 1.7-kilometer-wide gorge—then navigates the Batoka Gorge with world-class rapids for rafting, before widening into lush floodplains supporting diverse wildlife like elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and birds in parks such as Mana Pools and Lower Zambezi.

Its seasonal floods, peaking March to May from upstream rains, sustain fertile ecosystems, fisheries, and hydropower via dams like Kariba, while serving as a vital waterway for trade, tourism, and cultures across six countries despite challenges from droughts and development.
