Zerzevan Kalesi
Turkey, Turkey
Zerzevan Kalesi is a well-preserved Roman military fortress from the 3rd-7th centuries AD in Diyarbakır Province, southeastern Turkey, strategically positioned on a 124-meter rocky hill overlooking ancient trade routes between Amida (Diyarbakır) and Dara (Mardin).
It features extensive city walls enclosing 60 acres, a rare rock-cut Mithraeum temple with carved columns, niches, and Mithras symbols, plus churches, towers, cisterns, an arsenal, and underground shelters for up to 400 people during sieges.
Ongoing excavations since 2014 reveal daily Roman life, a baptismal font now in Istanbul's museum, and its role as an eastern frontier garrison until the Islamic conquest in 639 AD, earning UNESCO tentative World Heritage status.
