Zinder Grand Mosque

Zinder, Zinder Region, Niger

---

The Zinder Grand Mosque, located in the historic city of Zinder in Niger’s Zinder Region, was one of the country’s oldest and most important Islamic landmarks.

Built in the 19th century in the traditional Sudano-Sahelian style using mudbrick and banco (a mixture of mud and straw), it served for generations as a major center of worship and community life. Situated in the historic Birni quarter near the former sultan’s palace, the mosque was renowned for its distinctive architecture and cultural significance.

It attracted worshippers and visitors from across the region and was considered one of Niger’s most visited mosques. In September 2024, the mosque collapsed after severe flooding and heavy rainfall damaged the centuries-old structure. Despite its loss, the Zinder Grand Mosque remains an important symbol of the religious heritage, history, and architectural traditions of Zinder and Niger.
