The Comoros is an archipelagic nation made up of three main islands located in the Indian Ocean at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, between Madagascar and the eastern African mainland. The capital city is Moroni, situated on Grande Comore (Ngazidja).
Comoros has a small population of around 850,000 to 877,000 people and covers an area of about 1,861 square kilometers. The population is diverse, reflecting influences from Malay, Arab, African, and Malagasy ancestry. The official languages are Comorian, French, and Arabic, with Islam being the state religion.
Comoros achieved independence from France in 1975 and has since experienced political instability, marked by numerous coups. The country’s economy is based mostly on subsistence agriculture and remains one of the world’s poorest nations.
