Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is a country in Southeast Asia occupying the eastern half of the island of Timor, the exclave of Oecusse, and several small islands. Its capital and largest city is Dili. Timor-Leste has a mountainous landscape, covers about 14,950 square kilometers, and is divided into thirteen administrative districts.
The country has a mixed Austronesian and Papuan heritage, with Portuguese influences due to colonial rule until 1975. Timor-Leste achieved full independence after years of occupation and conflict, becoming a sovereign state in 2002. The country is a republic, with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government.
