9/11 Memorial & Museum

New York, NY, United States

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City stands as a solemn tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the six victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Located at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, the memorial features two massive reflecting pools set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers.

Each pool is nearly an acre in size and is bordered by bronze panels inscribed with the names of every person who perished in the attacks, creating a powerful space for remembrance and reflection. Beneath the memorial lies the museum, a vast 110,000-square-foot space that delves into the events of 9/11 through multimedia exhibits, personal narratives, and a collection of artifacts both monumental and intimate. Visitors encounter twisted steel beams, emergency vehicles, and recordings of last phone calls, all of which convey the human impact of the tragedy.

The museum also explores the global context of terrorism, the resilience of survivors and first responders, and the ongoing legacy of that fateful day. Designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker, the memorial’s minimalist aesthetic and grove of swamp white oak trees offer a contemplative contrast to the surrounding cityscape.
