Abaiang is a coral atoll located in the northern Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean. It consists of a series of islets surrounding a large lagoon, stretching about 37 kilometers long and up to one kilometer wide, with a total land area of around 17 square kilometers.

The atoll includes about 18 villages, with the main population centers on the largest island, Teiro, which hosts 16 of the villages. Abaiang has a subsistence economy that relies heavily on fishing, copra production, and small-scale agriculture, with breadfruit, bananas, and coconuts among the principal crops. The atoll is facing environmental challenges like coastal erosion and freshwater salinization due to climate change, which has led to some community relocations.

Historically, it was first documented by European explorers in the late 18th century and later became a site of missionary activity. Despite modern pressures, Abaiang retains a strong cultural identity and remains a significant part of Kiribati’s island community.
