Kiribati, officially the Republic of Kiribati, comprises 33 coral islands spread across the central Pacific Ocean, with a total land area of 811 square kilometers dispersed over a vast ocean territory. The capital, South Tarawa, consists of several islets connected by causeways.
Kiribati's population is about 128,800 as of 2025, most of whom are Micronesian. English and Gilbertese are official languages. The economy is based on subsistence farming, fishing, and remittances, with international aid playing a vital role. The nation became fully independent from the United Kingdom in 1979.
Kiribati is noted for its vulnerability to rising sea levels due to its low-lying geography and is considered one of the least developed countries in the world. Christianity is the principal religion.
