Agostyáni Arborétum
Tata, Hungary, Hungary
Agostyáni Arborétum is a 30.5-hectare arboretum nestled in the breathtaking Bocsájtó valley of the Gerecse Nature Reserve, located about 8 km from Tata (or 2.5 km from Agostyán) in Komárom-Esztergom county, Hungary, just under an hour from Budapest.
Founded in 1912 by Count Móric Eszterházy, who initially planted larch trees, it began as a forest nursery for coniferous seedlings and was developed into an arboretum by the mid-1960s through tree cultivation experiments testing non-native and rarely used species for climate tolerance, soil requirements, resistance, growth, and wood quality.
The arboretum houses nearly 300 tree and shrub species, including native Gerecse plants and exotic species such as Atlantic cedar, Oregon false cypress, Jeffrey pine, swamp cypress, giant thuja, sea-bank fir, tulip tree, and Turkish hazel, alongside conifers like larch, spruce, giant sequoia, and various pine, lime, birch, oak, yew, and shrub species.
The Bocsájtó creek divides the park, which includes two lakes, shaded forest walking paths, and has been designated as a Natura 2000 Special Bird Protection Area since 2004 due to its ecological significance. Open to visitors except on Mondays, the arboretum is accessible by foot, bicycle, car, or public transport and offers an ideal retreat for relaxing walks even on hot summer days under its towering pines, cypresses, and giant ferns.
