Altes Schloß Küps
Küps, Germany, Germany
Altes Schloss Küps, also known as the Middle Castle, is the oldest of Küps’ historic noble residences in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.
Its origins date back to at least 1151, when it served as the seat of the local nobility and was strategically built on a plateau near the Rodach River, protected by water and a moat. The castle was damaged during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and again during the Second Margrave War in the 16th century, but it was rebuilt each time.
Much of the present structure dates from the mid-1500s, while its distinctive stone bridge replaced the original drawbridge in the 18th century. Over the centuries, the building served various purposes, including as a school. Today, it remains an important historical landmark in Küps, reflecting the town’s long noble heritage and medieval past.
