Verified Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Cal State Fullerton

Fullerton, California, United States

The Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, California, was conceived in the early 1970s when faculty, students, and community members sought to transform a diseased orange grove on the northern part of the campus into a botanical garden.

The land, originally part of the Gillman family’s commercial Valencia orange groves, had suffered from “quick decline,” prompting efforts to rehabilitate it with a mix of native and non-native plants. An Arboretum Society was formed in 1972 and began fundraising and organizing community support, leading to the California State University system allocating 26 acres for the project.

The arboretum officially opened in 1979 and features diverse collections such as Mediterranean, desert, and woodland gardens, along with a Rare Fruit Grove, organic vegetable gardens, a Heritage House built in 1894, and a Japanese Garden. It serves as an educational, conservation, and recreational resource, hosting events, classes, and volunteer opportunities while showcasing over 4,000 plants adapted to Southern California’s climate.
