Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, popularly known as Guwahati Zoo, is the largest zoo in northeastern India, spread over about 175 hectares (432 acres) within the Hengrabari Reserved Forest in the heart of Guwahati, Assam.

Established in 1957 and opened to the public in 1958, it serves as a major “green lung” for the city and a centre for ex‑situ conservation, housing around 895–1,125 animals, birds, and reptiles representing more than 110–115 species from around the world, including tigers, lions, elephants, one‑horned rhinoceroses, primates, and a wide variety of birds and reptiles.

The zoo also contains an adjoining botanical garden with lush vegetation, hills, ponds, and streams, creating a forest‑like atmosphere where visitors can see both wildlife and a rich collection of plants, and it is open daily except Friday, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
