Assumption Cathedral, also known as Vác Cathedral, is the principal Roman Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Vác in Hungary. Located in the historic town of Vác on the Danube, it is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Michael the Archangel and serves as one of Hungary’s most important religious landmarks. The present cathedral was built between 1761 and 1777 in an impressive late Baroque style, replacing earlier churches that had been destroyed over the centuries by invasions and wars. Its grand façade, twin towers, dome, and richly decorated interior make it one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in the country. The cathedral is especially admired for its artwork, including frescoes by the renowned 18th-century painter Franz Anton Maulbertsch. During World War II, the building famously survived a Soviet bomb strike when the bomb hit the dome but failed to explode, an event many locals regarded as miraculous. Today, Assumption Cathedral remains an active place of worship and a major cultural attraction, drawing visitors with its architecture, history, and spiritual significance.
