Aydar Lake
Navoi Region, Uzbekistan
Aydar Lake in the Navoi Region of Uzbekistan is a large, man-made lake covering about 3,000 square kilometers, created as a result of Soviet-era water management projects in 1969 by diverting excess water from the Syr Darya River into a natural depression in the Kyzylkum Desert.
It is characterized by brackish water with a mineralization of around 2 grams per liter and is known for its vast sandy beaches that have earned it the nickname "sea in the sand." The lake supports diverse wildlife, including many fish species such as zander, carp, and catfish, making it popular for fishing, while also attracting migratory birds.
Despite its remote location in a desert environment, the area around Aydar Lake offers unique tourism opportunities like yurt camping, camel riding, and enjoying the serene natural setting far from urban life. The lake contributes to a local microclimate by increasing humidity which can lead to more rainfall in the region and stands as one of Uzbekistan's most notable natural attractions.
