Badakhshan
Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan
Badakhshan Province in far northeastern Afghanistan is a remote, mountainous region of about 44,000 square kilometers, dominated by the high Hindu Kush and Pamir ranges with many valleys carved by rivers like the Kokcha and Panj.
It includes the narrow Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan’s only land link to China, where elevations often exceed 3,000 meters and some peaks rise above 6,000 meters, making it one of the highest inhabited areas in the world.
Known historically as part of the Silk Road sphere, Badakhshan is sparsely populated and characterized by scattered villages, terraced farming along valley floors, and a mix of ethnic groups living in harsh but spectacular alpine landscapes.
