Bärenkasten is the ruin of a medieval fortress in Oderberg, Brandenburg, Germany.

Built between 1353 and 1355 on an island in the Oder River, it was created to protect an important river crossing, oversee trade routes, and collect customs duties. The fortress played a key role in the prosperity and security of the town during the Middle Ages.

Its unusual name, “Bärenkasten” (Bear Enclosure), dates from the 17th century, when bears were reportedly kept there for hunting and entertainment during visits by the Brandenburg electors. Historical records and contemporary accounts mention the presence of bears within the fortress grounds.

Although the fortress was expanded during the Thirty Years’ War, it gradually lost its military importance and was largely dismantled in the 18th century. Today, the remaining walls and ruins serve as a historic landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into Oderberg’s medieval past and its strategic importance along the Oder River.
