Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens
Stamford, Connecticut, United States
The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens in Stamford, Connecticut, began in 1913 when Dr. Francis A. Bartlett, a prominent dendrologist and founder of the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company, purchased 30 acres of woodland to use as his residence, research laboratory, and training school.
Over the years, he collected numerous rare and diverse trees and woody plants from around the world, many of which still thrive on the 93-acre property today. In 1965, the state acquired the land and opened it to the public in 1966 as the Connecticut State Arboretum, which later transferred to city ownership and management by a nonprofit.
The arboretum features champion trees, woodland walking trails, wildflower meadows, and specialized collections such as magnolias and ferns. It operates as a natural sanctuary and education center offering environmental, horticulture, and plant science programs, serving as both a peaceful outdoor retreat and a living classroom for visitors of all ages.
