Verified Bellingrath Gardens & Home

Alabama, United States

Bellingrath Gardens & Home in Alabama is a 65-acre public garden and historic estate located on the Fowl River near Mobile.

The property was originally purchased as a fishing camp by Walter Bellingrath, an early Coca-Cola bottler, and developed into a botanical paradise by Walter and his wife Bessie Mae Morse Bellingrath starting in the 1920s. The estate's centerpiece is the 15-room English Renaissance-style mansion, completed in 1935, designed by architect George Bigelow Rogers using salvaged brick and ironwork from historic Mobile buildings.

The gardens are renowned for their year-round blooming plants including over 2,000 rose varieties, camellias, azaleas, and a unique Asian-American Garden featuring a Japanese tea house and Chinese pavilion.

Water features prominently throughout, with ponds, fountains, terraces, and a grotto providing serene settings. Bellingrath Gardens opened to the public in 1932 and became a museum after the Bellingraths' deaths, with the estate now overseen by a nonprofit foundation supporting education and cultural institutions.

It is celebrated as one of the finest public gardens in the United States, attracting visitors with its blend of horticultural beauty, historic architecture, and Southern charm.
