Bezławki
Poland, Poland
Bezławki in northeastern Poland houses a remarkably preserved small Gothic castle built by the Teutonic Knights after 1377, following the village's founding in 1371, as a rectangular brick residence with thick walls, stepped gables, and a surrounding defensive enclosure topped by half-towers. First noted in records during a 1402 stopover by Teutonic commander Wilhelm von Helfenstein and Lithuanian prince Świdrygiełło, brother of King Władysław II Jagiełło, it functioned as a minor outpost for regional oversight rather than major administration, losing military relevance after 15th-century Polish-Teutonic conflicts. Converted into a Protestant church in 1583 with interior alterations, a western belfry tower added in 1726–1730, and later repurposed for Catholic use postwar, it stands today as Poland's best-surviving example of a Teutonic chamberlain's residence amid fields near Reszel.
