The Botanischer Garten Oldenburg, maintained by the University of Oldenburg, was established in 1882 initially as a teaching garden and later expanded with a systematic garden featuring around 1,200 plant species from Oldenburg and East Frisia.

The garden spans approximately 3.7 hectares and includes four geographic divisions created in 1932 to showcase Boreal, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pontic plant species, along with areas representing the Central Mountains. It underwent redesigns throughout the 20th century, adding thematic areas such as heath, marsh, dunes, and a medicinal plant garden, with continual enhancements including an alpine garden and cactus house.

Today, the garden cultivates about 4,000 taxa and serves as a scientific and educational institution while also providing a tranquil green space in the city. It is open daily to the public free of charge and combines research with public engagement in botany and ecology.
