Bratian is a village in northern Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie County near the confluence of the Wel and Drwęca rivers, first mentioned in 1343 during a meeting between Mazovian princes and Teutonic Grand Master Ludolf König to set borders.
Named after Brother Jan, a Polish Teutonic knight who received lands here around 1246, it hosted a Teutonic castle built 1340-1360 as a vogt's seat under Malbork commandry, captured by Poles post-Grunwald in 1410 and permanently after the 1466 Second Peace of Toruń.
Serving as a Polish starosty under families like Działyńskis and Czapskis until Prussian partition in 1772, the castle was partially dismantled by 1785 for a mill, leaving ruins amid its transition through Swedish grants and modern gmina status.
