Verified Brighton Pier

Brighton, East Sussex, England, United Kingdom

Brighton Pier, also known as Brighton Palace Pier, is a famous pleasure pier on the seafront of Brighton, East Sussex, England. It stretches 1,722 feet (525 meters) out into the English Channel and is the only one of Brighton’s original three piers still in operation today. The pier is located in the city center and has been a key part of Brighton's identity and tourism since it officially opened on May 20, 1899.

The pier was built to replace the older Royal Suspension Chain Pier, which had deteriorated and was destroyed by a storm during the new pier’s construction in 1896. Some parts of the old pier were reused for the new one. Designed by R. St. George Moore, the new structure cost £27,000 at the time and featured over 3,000 lights along the promenade, making it a dazzling sight.

Brighton Pier quickly became an entertainment hub. By 1911, its original reading rooms were turned into a theater that hosted famous performers like Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin early in their careers. Later on, amusement rides and fairground attractions became a major feature, drawing families and tourists for fun by the sea. During World War II, the pier was closed and a section was removed to prevent possible enemy landings.

Over the decades, the pier has changed with the times. Its theater was removed in the 1980s and replaced with a large amusement arcade and rides, shifting the pier’s focus firmly toward funfair attractions.

Today, Brighton Pier is known for its lively atmosphere. It features traditional fish and chip shops, sweet stalls, arcades filled with games, and a variety of funfair rides from roller coasters to carousels and haunted houses. It attracts millions of visitors every year, remaining an iconic part of British seaside culture and regularly appearing in films, TV series, and music. The pier blends history, entertainment, and classic seaside experiences, making it a must-visit landmark on the south coast of England.
